5W1H is a foundational framework used for problem-solving, planning, decision-making, and analysis. Also known as the Kipling Method, it structures information by asking six fundamental questions:

Who: Identifies the people, stakeholders, or target audience involved.
What: Describes the situation, core product, or specific problem.
Where: Pinpoints the location, platform, or environment.
When: Establishes the timeline, deadline, or duration.
Why: Explains the reasons, objectives, or pain points.
How: Details the methods, resources, and steps to execute.

It is widely used across investigative journalism, marketing analytics, UX design, and business management to gather context and prevent premature assumptions.

Below I have used this creatively to re-introduce myself to my LinkedIn community.

Six months off the feed. Time to reintroduce myself.

WHY
I do this work because decisions made today shape the world others will inherit. That's not a small thing, and it deserves serious thinking.

HOW
The tool I reach for most is the DECODER methodology, a seven-stage strategic thinking framework developed across years of real-world advisory work. Not theory. Field-tested.

WHAT
I help mission-driven organisations do one thing well: think more clearly about where they're going and how they'll get there. My work sits at the intersection of strategy, change management, and sustainability, because in my experience, you can't separate them.

WHO FOR
For-purpose boards, leadership teams, and founders seeking a strategy that is agile and impactful. Perhaps you are navigating a new direction, funding shifts, growth pressure, or simply your strategy no longer fits the organisation you've become.

WHEN
The best time to act was yesterday. The next best time is today.

WHERE
For over two decades, I've worked across government, for-purpose organisations, and social enterprises in Aotearoa and Australia.

WHO
I'm Haedon Smith, a strategy and sustainability consultant based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and the founder of ARTOV Strategy Design and thinksprint™

If that sounds like work you're navigating right now, or if you know someone who is, I'd love to reconnect.

More to come. 👋
